How many of you were able to take in the Interior Design Show in
Toronto this past week? If you've never been, I encourage you to go
or to attend similar shows in your own town. It's a great
gathering of innovative ideas for the home and a chance to hob nob
it with upcoming design stars who are gifted in
seeing the world in such an exciting and aesthetically-forward
way.

I know what you're probably thinking, 'What does this have to do
with me? I'm a foodie!' Well, think about it; design influences our
everyday lives to the point where we almost take it for granted. It
trickles down to everything, from the kitchen tools we use to
prepare our meals to the look and feel of the consumer products we
pluck off of supermarket shelves. Lest we forget, there was a time
when Harvest Gold and Avocado Green were the most popular colour
choices in kitchen appliances. What, you don't remember Harvest
Gold? Wow, you're young...
See below for a few cool ideas from this year's show.

- This eco-friendly water cooler from Aquaovo (aqua being Latin for water and ovo
begin Latin for egg) could come and live in my humble kitchen any
day. There's something very comforting about that egg shape,
isn't there? Eggs are fragile and strong at the same time
and I love how the designers have introduced the shape into this
piece. But, look closely, does anyone else think it's kinda of
a cheeky design as well? Seriously, step back and check it
out. I'll keep it to myself, but I know you see it,
too!
- More ovals! A champagne cooler from the rockstar of industrial
design, Karim Rashid. He's Canadian, too.
You've probably seen his influence all over modern houseware
items (cartoon-like colours, aerodynamic shapes, and twists and
curves where you least expect them). This cooler looks like
something straight out of a science fiction movie. You
know how in depictions of the future everyone's decked out in
silver lame and white boots? Well, I suspect we'll cool our
bubbly in something like this as well. What do you think: Super
stylish or over the top? I vote for stylish.
- Slowly, but surely, I've come to the realization that I have a
major mug obsession. And, how could you not love this stack of
totem pole mugs! Such a clever idea. To be honest, I'd probably use
them as a decorative item, than a practical one, but I'd be as smug
as a bug if I owned these mugs.
