health benefits of tea

Last week, we revealed four ways that drinking tea can help combat the effects of stress, and this week, we’re getting physical. While tea is certainly great for the mind, it can also work wonders on the body. Check out these four physical health benefits of tea, as explained to us by tea expert and holistic nutritionist Joy McCarthy

1. Just Do It

Whether you want to regulate your digestive system to prevent constipation, or you want to treat constipation fast, tea is a great way to do just that. Joy says, “Fennel Tea helps to relax the muscles of the digestive system and promote proper digestion and elimination.”Try this Organic“Le Digestif” blend. If prevention is what you’re looking for, try a peppermint or ginger tea. They both “aid in digestion, which helps to reduce the risk of getting backed up in the first place. Skip dessert and have a warm, sweet cup of these digestive aids instead.”

2. Allergy Alert

“Chamomile helps reduce allergies by acting as a natural anti-histamine, while rooibos tea contains two powerful bioflavanoids that block the release of histamine, allowing you to ditch the tissues and get back to your life.” Try DAVIDsTEA Cinnamon Rooibos Chai Tea to help you breathe better! If rooibos isn’t your thing, “Yerba Mate helps relieve allergies by stimulating the adrenal glands to produce corticosteroids. As a result, they suppress the overactive immune system, reduce inflammation and open the respiratory passages for easier breathing.”

3. Healthy Skin is Always In

Tea works to maintain your health from the inside-out. You’ll be happy to know that your complexion can also benefit from switching from coffee to tea (or at least alternating). "Green and white teas are said to create a combination of antioxidants to help fight aging," explains Joy. "Tea also contributes to proper hydration, which is vital to keeping skin looking youthful and wrinkle-free. Green tea offers protection from damage caused by environmental pollutants, which can contribute to premature aging."

Tired of spending so much money on skin products? "Green tea can be used to create an invigorating and natural facial toner, and for the ultimate eye de-puffer, apply one cooled teabag to each eye and relax for 10-15 minutes. The tannins in the tea reduce unwanted puffiness and inflammation."

4. The Big C

Studies are starting to show that tea might also play a role in cancer prevention. "The main ingredient researchers have been so intrigued with is a polyphenol found in tea called EGCG," Joy tells us. "This powerful compound has the ability to neutralize free radicals and may protect cells from the DNA that contributes to the development of cancer. These polyphenols have also been shown to inhibit the growth of tumour cells and even cause cancer cells to die. Researchers have also found green tea to have great immune boosting qualities to help our body’s fight off disease. Although more research is required, the current findings have left researchers with new information to aid in the fight against cancer."
