What did you think of the new revamped Restaurant Takeover? It's Restaurant Makeover but with a facelift and with hidden cameras to boot. The concept stays the same: a restaurant in crisis asks the crew for help with the menu and décor and the team has six days to deliver results.
In last night's premiere episode, owner Bernice definitely needed a hand revamping The Village Pizza, her restaurant of 23 years. The business was in trouble and Chef Corbin Tomaszeski and designer Paula Velez were more than ready to help.
Can you believe how they reacted to the food? Horrifying! They were even less complimentary about the decor, which I have to agree was VERY cluttered.
Bernice’s daughter Desiree was taken under Chef Corbin’s wing and taught a few new tricks in the kitchen in an attempt to totally change the feel of the restaurant and make the focus about the pizza again. First and foremost, the restaurant had to fine-tune their signature tomato sauce, then develop an amazing starter salad to impress customers, and finally, make their pizzas as memorable as they possibly could.
The team decided that The Village Pizza's signature pizzas would be the Roasted Brussel Sprouts with Bacon and the Flaming Portuguese Pig Pizza.
Bernice’s reaction to her restaurant’s demolition was intense. I know they bring them back specifically to get that response but it was a little heartbreaking, non? Igor, everyone's favourite contractor, was back and with more face time. Not surprisingly since he gets his share of fan mail, especially from the ladies.
Igor and his crew really had their work cut out for them. They had six days to completely overhaul a restaurant AND the back bar. A tall order but they came through in the end. Then came the reveal. It was one of the most dramatic reveals I've seen on the show. Bernice really hated it at first and said so in no uncertain terms. Thank goodness she warmed up to it eventually but eek!
The clean and modern feel of the restaurant finished result may have been a shock at first, but it was definitely necessary. It was also great having Chef Corbin tweeting live through the premiere. (@ChefCorbin #RTO)
