4 Ways Tea Combats the Effects of Stress

There are tons of health benefits that come with drinking tea. As people return from winter holidays and stress levels are on the rise, we've tapped tea expert and holistic nutritionist, Joy McCarthy, to demysteafy the stress-busting benefits of loose leaves.

“Tea is well-known for its broad spectrum of health benefits,” explains Joy. “From weight loss and boosting immunity, to preventing cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.”  But here are four ways daily intake of tea can help keep you balanced in the day-to-day: 

 

1. Chill Out

“Tea has powerful psychological benefits. Researchers have found that the amino acid that is found in tea, Theanine can enhance mental performance, improve mood, fight depression and lower anxiety. Just one more reason to make 'tea time' part of your routine.” Passionflower is a great ingredient to look out for, as Joy explains, because studies have found it’s “just as efficient as commonly prescribed anxiety medications, without the unwanted side effects.”

2. Weight a Minute

“Green tea is rich in EGCG,” says Joy, “a type of polyphenol which recent studies have shown to help boost metabolism and aid in weight loss. Researchers have also found oolong to cause a significant increase in a person’s ability to burn fat when consumed regularly.” We suggest trying DAVIDsTEA Organic Detox Green Tea or their “The Skinny” Oolong Tea to lighten the load stress may have caused you to pack on.

3. Aching for a Break

Got a pounding headache? There’s no shortage of teas to combat the effects of a long day. Some key ingredients that fight against headaches, which are often brought on by stress, are: cinnamon, ginger and chamomile. These natural relaxants are sure soothe the mind and body.

4. Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop

Having a hard time falling asleep? Insomnia can be a real pain, and Joy explains that “the ritual of sitting down with a hot cup of tea at bedtime can help you relax and aid in your ability to get to sleep more easily.” Helpful ingredients to sip before snoozing are passionflower and valerian root. “Passionflower aids in the transition into a restful sleep without the ‘narcotic’ hangover, while valerian root acts as a natural sedative due to a combination of compounds working synergistically to relax the body’s nervous system.” You’ll love Sweet Dreams and Super Ginger!
