This is How Michael Symon Cleans His Cast Iron Pans

One of Food Network Canada’s biggest chefs is here to share his tips around the kitchen. While Michael Symon loves his outdoor cooking, he spends (like many of us), plenty of time inside his kitchen as well. And this means that just like us, he needs to clean pots, pans and dishes, which is why we’re excited that he is sharing his know-how about cleaning cast iron pans.

Step 1

Give the pan a quick wipe with a paper towel.

Step 2

Turn the stove on and heat up the pan (on high heat), add kosher salt and coat the bottom of the pan.

Step 3

Allow the salt to heat up. (The salt is anti-microbial and it also absorbs fat from the pan, therefore sealing it.)

Step 4

Take a kitchen towel and rub the salt out into the pan (using it as the cleaning agent). Keep doing this until you see the salt getting darker from the oils. Once this is complete, discard the salt, wipe the pan  and voila, you’re done!
