Ty’s wish

Growing up in Sudbury, Ontario, 17-year-old Ty has been passionate about cooking since the age of four. When Ty was born, he was diagnosed with heart disease and recently a rare genetic muscular syndrome which caused a worsened scoliosis compromising his lung capacity, which required surgery and multiple trips to the hospital. Despite having numerous health issues, his resilience stems from finding comfort in cooking. Ty hasn’t let his diagnoses stop him from exploring new recipes in the kitchen and mastering family ones.

So, with the help of the Make-A-Wish foundation and his family and friends, Ty put together a cookbook of recipes, taking inspiration from his foodie dad Bernie and some of his favourite chefs like Food Network star Mark McEwan.

“I want to give a special thanks to Make-A-Wish Canada for granting me my wish and making my dream come true,” Ty writes in his book. “I hope these recipes inspire others to cook and be creative in the kitchen. Even if you don’t think you are a good cook, I encourage you to try and never give up!” he explains.

Mouthwatering recipes from around the world

In the cookbook, you’ll find a wide range of delicious yet easy-to-follow recipes for everything from apps to mains to desserts. There are recipes for every occasion, inspired by a variety of different cultures. Think: Coq Au Vin, Jerk Chicken, Thai Basil Pork, Salted Caramel Tarts and so much more! In the cookbook, you’ll also find family recipes from Ty’s grandmother Meme, including her pea soup, dumplings and other delights.

Shrimp is grilled to tender perfection in then basted in a buttery mix of herbs and spices. This mouthwatering appetizer is just one of the many inspirational recipes included in Ty’s cookbook. Throughout the book, there are also heartwarming kitchen memories shared by Ty’s family and friends.

“Ty is an even bigger foodie than [his dad Bernie], growing vegetables in his garden, making meals all hours of the night. I am never surprised but always amazed [with] what Ty is up to in the kitchen,” family friend Connie Sacchetto shared.
