You don’t need a deep fryer to make these crispy and gooey mozzarella sticks! Baked in the air fryer with a couple tricks to ensure you get the perfect mozzarella sticks every time. The first trick is to double bread the cheese for a thick enough crust. This will ensure the cheese doesn’t spill out when cooking. The second trick is to freeze the cheese before cooking to ensure it doesn’t melt too quickly. Lastly, for maximum cheese pull, use cheese string mozzarella.
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. In a small mixing bowl stir together the bread crumbs, garlic powder, oregano, salt and pepper.
Coat each mozzarella stick with flour, dip in egg wash and toss in breadcrumbs. Repeat to double coat, shaking off any loose flour or breadcrumbs as you go. Repeat with remaining mozzarella sticks.
Transfer to the prepared baking sheet and freeze for a minimum of 15 minutes, to allow the cheese to firm up.
Brush the breading lightly with olive oil for a more golden colour, if desired. Working in batches, air fry at 400°F for 5 minutes. Rotate and cook for an additional 5 minutes.
Serve immediately with marinara sauce for dipping!
