egg

cup (60 mL) dry bread crumbs
¼
cup (60 mL) apple juice

tsp (2 mL) caraway seed, lightly crushed
½
tsp (2 mL) each salt and pepper

lb(s) (500 g) fresh bratwurst or other German-style sausages

deli-thin slices Gruyere or Swiss cheese

slices rye bread, toasted

dill pickle slices (optional)
½
cup (125 mL) sauerkraut, drained (optional)
¼
cup (60 mL) grainy or Dijon mustard (optional)

Step 1

In large bowl, beat egg. Stir in bread crumbs, apple juice, caraway, salt and pepper. Remove casings from sausages; mix sausage meat in until well combined. Shape into four ¾-inch (2 cm) thick patties.

Step 2

Place on greased grill over medium-high heat; cook, turning once, until no longer pink inside, about 10 to 12 minutes. Top with cheese.

Step 3

Sandwich on toasted bread with pickles, sauerkraut and mustard, if using.
