Sweet, syrupy saskatoons meet a buttery, crispy topping in this cherished Prairie dessert.

Ingredients

cups (1 L) freshly picked saskatoon berries (if using frozen berries, they must be completely thawed and excess moisture removed)

cup (175 mL) flour
½
cup (125 mL) granulated sugar
½
cup (125 mL) packed brown sugar
¾
tsp (4 mL) cinnamon
¼
tsp (1 mL) nutmeg
pinch salt
½
cup (125 mL) cold butter

Directions
Step 1
Add berries to buttered 10- x 6-inch (3 L) baking dish.
Step 2
In bowl, mix together flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt. Using pastry blender or two knives, cut in butter until mixture is in coarse crumbs.
Step 3
Sprinkle flour mixture evenly over berries. Bake in 350°F (180°C) oven for 40 minutes, or until topping is golden brown. Serve warm with whipped cream or ice cream.
